Many dreams are cited to prove the point that clothes serve symbolically as the foetal membranes and ultimately represent maternal protection. During pregnancy, a garment frequently appears as a symbol in the dream and represents the female genital. Clothes that are thin and filmy represent the foetal membrane more directly. Primitive cultural attitudes towards clothes are studied, as well as Jewish ceremonial dress, all of which can readily be interpreted as having given material significance to clothes. A rabbi is quoted as having said that the Jewish praying shawl is the amnion in which the Jewish man is reborn each morning when he wraps himself in it.
