This communication forms part of more extensive researches on the psycho-analysis of jealousy. It is based on a fragment of the analysis of a case of male homosexuality with impotence which was treated successfully. In the course of treatment, when the patient made his first efforts at heterosexuality, he showed a state of jealousy, brief but violent, and normal in so far as the sex of the partner and rival (the psycho-analyst) are concerned. The problem is to determine the significance of this state of jealousy; whether it should be considered as constituting therapeutic progress, the rejection of homosexuality, or as a resistance against the transfer of a passive homosexuality, deeper and more firmly rooted than the 'pseudo-active' homosexuality of external behaviour.
Discussion of the material, and the development of analysis, proved that the first interpretation, though not false, was the more superficial. The second was more profound and fruitful: the pseudo-active homosexual practices, the marriage project, the jealousy, were the avatars of a defence directed principally against a passive homosexual fixation on the father, which itself had been determined in part by the paternal neglect in the education of the patient.
