The Psychoanalytic Quarterly, 1949, Vol. XVIII, p. 303.
An earlier article dealing with a transvestite is reviewed and the formulation is as follows: patient in woman's clothes = mother with a penis = penis in general. The longing to be admired as a girl required him to equip this girl with a penis and to fantasy her as a penis. Thus 'I am a girl' and 'my whole body is a penis' was condensed into 'I = my whole body; a girl = the little one = the penis. Thus the equation 'penis = child' can also assume the form of 'penis = girl'.
Women who fantasy their body as a penis disprove their oral-sadistic tendencies against the penis through their harmonious unity with it. The history is given of such a woman whose fantasy of being a woman showed its repression of the idea 'I am robbing a man and must therefore fear him'. This idea is applied to several characters from literature, such as King Lear's daughter Cordelia. Mignon is also subjected to investigation from this point of view.
The clown, dwarf and prodigy are all discussed from the standpoint that phallic exhibition is repressed and must be replaced by pregenital exhibition with its fantasies of omnipotence. 'If my penis is too small, I am in my whole person a penis which you must still respect'. This is illustrated by clinical material. The castration denial is twofold: 'I keep my penis by acting as though I were a girl' and 'girls are no different from myself'. A masochistic patient's tears ultimately related to the poor child being caressed until it wetted itself. The love the man directs towards a phallus girl is passive, phallic and urethral.
In conclusion, the author states that the phallus girl is not only a penis but also a child, fæces and milk. The penis is the final member of the series of introjects and one which is again projected.
