In 1900 this classic, which demonstrates, to use Freud's own words, that 'there is a psychological technique which makes it possible to interpret dreams', was first published. This is the third reprinting of the revised translation based on the eighth German edition first published in English in 1937. The translation of the first German edition was published in Great Britain in 1913.
No review of this book, which is so important both historically and as a present-day text-book, is really possible or necessary. Students of psychiatry who try to begin to learn about dreams without reading it and without keeping it at their bedside will regret the time they have lost when they eventually come to understand that they should have digested its contents before tackling the voluminous literature of the past fifty years which is based on the clinical observations and theoretical formulations given in this book.
