Every English-speaking psycho-analyst will appreciate greatly this translation of Bleuler's monograph. Bleuler's conception of schizophrenia dates from 1911, when the present work, completed in 1908, was published in Aschaffenburg's Handbuch. Although Bleuler's textbook was translated many years ago by Brill, the detailed picture provided in this monograph was only available to those who read German easily.
The contents should not only be known to all psycho-analysts, but this is one of the few psychiatric monographs which should also be widely read by medical students and physicians. Nowhere in the writings of Meyer and his pupils or of Freud and his pupils is there so much detailed description. To the basic knowledge provided by this book the young psychiatrist or psycho-analyst can add all that Meyer added with his view of the parergastric reaction type as an alternative formulation and all the further psychopathology educed by the development of psycho-analysis since 1911.
The translation by Joseph Zinkin is lucid. The prominent psycho-analysts who for so long advocated an English version of this work will be pleased by the result.
