The first review under this title was published in 1944. This edition covers more or less the same topics, but contains 200 more pages.
The chapters which will interest psycho-analysts most are 'Psychotherapy' by E. A. Bennet; 'Suicide' by E. Stengel; 'Psychopathology' by S. M. Coleman; 'Cybernetics' by W. R. Ashby. The review of 'Personality Tests 1944–49' by H. J. Eysenck; 'Schizophrenia' by H. Gillies; 'Delinquency and Crime' by Sir Norwood East; 'Sleep and its Disturbances' by M. N. Pai are also relevant to psycho-analytic work.
In the Introduction, G. W. T. H. Fleming, editor of the Journal of Mental Science, promises a third edition in 1955, in which some of the topics omitted in the second edition but covered in the first, for instance Child Psychiatry, will be included. He mentions psychiatric abstracts, such as Excerpta Medica, as being now indispensable, but does not discuss the relationship of the type of review published in this book to abstracting journals.
Although the reviews are of unequal value in their discriminating comment and inclusiveness, they will be of great value to many; nevertheless some readers will look forward to the time when a body such as the Royal Medico-Psychological Association can foster reviews in the psychiatric field similar, for example, to those published in psychological or physiological reviews.
