Schilder's death as the result of a street accident at the early age of fifty-four in 1940 left a sorry gap in the group of psycho-analytic psychiatrists who constantly stimulated American students. It will be many years before the value of Schilder's publications becomes merely historical.
The book now under review was first translated and published in 1928 as No. 50 of the Nervous and Mental Disease Monograph series a few years after its publication in German. Schilder's was the first attempt to apply meta-psychology to psychiatry on a wide basis and, for this reason alone, the book should be read by all students of psycho-analysis.
Although the contributions psycho-analysts have made to the psychopathology of the functional psychoses during the past twenty-five years supersede much of what Schilder has here written, he asks many questions which are still unanswered, and too few writers stimulate students by asking the questions to which there are still no answers.
His chapters on amentia, aphasia, agnosia, epilepsy, paresis, Korsakoff disorder and deliria cover fields still neglected by psycho-analysts.
The re-publication of this book is very welcome.
