Subsequent to a threat by her nurse that she would die if she continued to masturbate, a girl of nine developed an obsessive urge to ask questions, mainly about 'buttons'. The analytic exploration showed the role of a primal scene experience, of the penis envy, of the death of the girl's mother in childbirth and the significance of the obsessive questioning as a form of expiation for herself as well as for the nurse.
