This work is in two parts—the first deals with Hate, Greed, and Aggression, the second with Love, Guilt, and Reparation—but it stresses the constant interaction of Love and Hate in the development and later adult functioning of the personality. The book is short and does not include the detailed evidence for statements, which the authors have gleaned from psycho-analytic work with children and adults. The infant's reactions to frustration at the breast are described; the hatred and aggressive craving, feelings of emptiness, uncontrollable explosive feelings and impulses leading to awareness of love (from desire), and dependence (from need). The infant is pictured in this primitive danger situation, with itself and its loved ones threatened by its destructiveness, urgently devising methods for achieving security and safety against these dangers. Feelings of guilt and love, spurred by an optimum amount of aggression, stimulate and maintain drives towards reparation and stabilizing of character. This book is not only a key study for all workers in psycho-analysis, psychiatry, and psychology, but makes enjoyable reading and throws light on difficulties in family relationships, bringing up children, choice of love partners, and other problems of common interest.
