On 4 February, 1955, a bust of Sigmund Freud, the donation of Dr. Ernest Jones, was unveiled. Preceding this ceremony a congregation took place in the Auditorium Maximum of the University. After an opening speech by the Rector, Professor Dr. Hans Radon, the Dean of the Medical Faculty, Dr. Franz Brücke, brilliantly presented Freud's connection with the University. Dr. Hans Hoff, Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry, who inaugurated the erection of this memorial, described Freud's revolutionary influence on modern psychiatry and on the sciences in general. He was followed by Dr. E. Krapf and by Dr. Leo Bartemeier, who spoke on behalf of the American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association, and the American Psychoanalytic Association. Finally, Dr. Alfred Winterstein, President of the Vienna Psychoanalytic Association, recalled to the congregation how Freud, the man and the scientist, came to make those far-reaching discoveries which have become the foundation of the science of psycho-analysis.
The bust bears the inscription:
ostaklein' ainigmat' edeikai kratistoshnaner (Greatest of men, he held the key to the deepest mysteries.)
On the evening preceding the unveiling a banquet took place, arranged by the Vienna Psycho-Analytic Society. Dr. Alfred Winterstein, who presided, welcomed the delegates from abroad, the head of the University Clinic of Neurology and Psychiatry, Dr. Hans Hoff, and the Director of the Museum of Art, Dr. E. Buschbeck. Messages of congratulation were received from the psychoanalytic organizations of Switzerland (Dr. Philip Sarasin), Germany (Dr. Carl Müller-Braunschweig), Great Britain (Dr. Sylvia Payne), Italy (Professor Perotti), Belgium (Dr. Lechat), France (Princesse Marie Bonaparte). Dr. Leo Bartemeier replied to the toast.
