The sub-title of this book is misleading, in spite of sections headed 'The psychogenesis of lesbianism', and 'The psychopathology of female homosexuality'. It consists almost entirely of snippets—extracts from case material, 'autobiographical confessions', information obtained by the 'direct interview' method from prostitutes, quotations from other writers, and abstracts of books such as The Well of Loneliness. It is difficult to know for whom it is written.

The author's interest in the subject is very wide. He has travelled to many countries in pursuit of his study, and has compiled an extensive bibliography which would be valuable but for inaccuracies such as the following item: 'Brierley, Marjorie, "Specific Determinants in Feminine Development."
