The late Dr. Oberndorf did many services for psycho-analysis. One of his last was this valuable personal summary of the development of psycho-analysis in the U.S.A. It will stimulate older analysts to remember their development and it will do much to help younger analysts and students to see the problems of the present in prospective. Psycho-analysis itself and the relationship of psycho-analysis
to medicine, psychiatry, neurology, psychology, and sociology are well covered, but many readers will notice minor inaccuracies and gaps. It is to be hoped that Dr. Oberndorf's literary executors will ask for and be able to make use of corrections and additions before a second edition is published. Every analyst and student should be unsatisfied until he has read this book. It is an excellent basis for a definitive history. The index is detailed.
