In 1939 the author pointed to the auditory sphere as the nucleus of the superego and hinted that a further investigation of dreams with this idea in mind might be profitable. Here he states what he considers to be the logical conclusion of his argument—that speech elements in the manifest content of dreams are a direct contribution from the superego. From supporting analytic material he suggests that the nearer the sleeper is to wakefulness the clearer become the superego's comments on the dream, as though casting the mental eye on the dream during the waking process assisted in reinstating reality. He then traces adumbrations of his theory in Freud.
