This is a paper about precognition. Though the author prefers to avoid the word there is no need to do so in a short abstract. He sets out to describe what on the face of it would be a somewhat dubious precognitive experience; only analysis could reveal the numerous coincidences which give it evidential value.
The manifest content of a patient's dream contained what looked like a reference to an event which occurred at least an hour after he had woken up and which was reported in a newspaper on the following day. Eisenbud treats this event as an ordinary day residue—i.e. as though it had occurred on the day before the dream instead of the day after. An intricate relationship to the manifest content of the dream is then revealed. Not only does this enable him to make an efficient dream construction, it also shows reference to a current emotional problem of the analyst—a phenomenon usually regarded as a sine qua non of psi-conditioned dreams.
The paper is to be continued.
