The character of the work of Edvard Munch changed after a psychotic illness. Before it his pictures were dominated by his fears of object-relationship—of visual over-stimulation, destructive incorporation and loss. After it they became more tranquil. This was possible because his pictures themselves became human objects for him which he treated in such a way as to protect himself against these fears.
