When a patient reports colour in a dream the immediate response is one of surprise and resistance. The latent content consists frequently of elements from the scoptophilic-exhibitionistic life of the patient. The author suggests that the black and white imagery of most dreams is an indication that the resistance has succeeded in camouflaging the latent dream thoughts and wishes. Colour is removed in the service of repression. The threat of the return of the repressed stimulates colour in dreams, particularly if the repressed is connected with exhibitionistic-scoptophilic impulses. Colour in dreams represents a further regression in the direction of pictorial representation calling forth the reproduction of sensory images or symbolic distortions of these images.
