Visual experiences contribute to the development of the superego in as important a way as auditory impressions. The author quotes Freud's 'non vixit' dream and a dream of one of his own patients to support this theory. While colour in dreams is often associated with exhibitionism and scoptophilia, this is not invariable. Different instinctual strivings may find expression through colour. The colours which appear in dreams can often be traced to specific experiences in the environment rather than to pre-existing colour elements present constitutionally in the physiological visual apparatus.
