A nineteen-year-old male patient, addicted to marijuana and heroin, was under analysis for thirty-eight months. A tolerant attitude was maintained towards the addiction and no demand was made on him to give it up in the initial stages of analysis. This enabled him to gain insight into the oral problems behind the addiction. This facilitated a self-imposed weaning process. Acting out set a difficult technical problem. The patient progressed sufficiently to graduate from college, leave his parents' home, and enter work of his own choice.
