Garma gives numerous examples to illustrate the manner of linkage of later anxieties with early oral ones to produce the Isakower phenomenon or the visible dream screen—by means of oral regression in the face of a current anxiety, by condensation of fantasies concerning the penis and the breast, etc. Of particular note is the representation in one scene of both the flattened breast seen by the infant and the rounded breast seen by the older child. The rounded breast may be condensed with the breasts or the abdomen of pregnancy, the flattened breast with the abdominal wall. Oscillation between two such sets of fantasies may occur in the same dream. Oral regression may fail as a defence against a later anxiety if the oral frustrations act as a reinforcement of the later ones.
