An obsessional neurotic's fear of the number 13 masked castration anxiety caused by his death-wishes towards his wife. The authors cite numerous examples from folk-lore and religion to prove that here too the number 13 represents both the danger of castration and the triumphant phallus, and that the two meanings are closely associated.
