Except for a single page of additional notes, this volume is a reprint of Vols. IV and V of the Standard Edition of the Works of Sigmund Freud (Hogarth Press, 1953), already reviewed in this Journal (1954, 35, 68). It thus enables readers who for one reason or another are not subscribers to the Standard Edition to benefit by James Strachey's new and first-class translation of the book that Freud himself regarded as his most important work, and by all the special features that make that edition so valuable a source of information relevant to the text itself. The Editor makes full acknowledgement to Anna Freud 'for her unfailing help and criticism at every stage of the work'.
