This is a reprint of a collection of caricature sketches made on the occasion of the Eighth International
Psycho-Analytical Congress at Salzburg in 1924. Copies of it were privately circulated at the time, but it has now for the first time been made available to the public and has been furnished with a preface and the Presidential Address to the Congress.
There are sketches of eighty-eight psycho-analysts in the book. The general artistic level is high, but some of the drawings are naturally more successful than others in capturing the characteristic elements of the persons concerned. Since I knew them all it might be of some interest if I recorded my judgement of the various sketches. The most successful appear to me to be those of Bernfeld, Boehm, Eitingon, Helene Deutsch, van Emden, Federn, Levy, Pailthorpe, Sachs, James Strachey, Weiss, and Winterstein. Those of Abraham, Alexander, Ferenzci, Hollos, and Otto Rank perhaps err on the cruel side. The least successful are those of Wälder, Hoffer, Landauer, Nunberg, Mira Oberholzer, Pfister, Beate Rank, Reich, Reik, Ella Sharpe, and (in the victim's opinion) myself.
The authors and publishers are to be congratulated on this historically interesting collection.
