This monograph, published in German in 1940, is an unpretentious record of Mrs. Schwing's experiences and observations in the psycho-analytically orientated nursing and treatment of a few chronic schizophrenics in the Vienna University Klinik. She was at the time receiving psycho-analytical training from the late Paul Federn, who also supervised her work at the Klinik. This book has since become a classic whose translation into English was long overdue. It preceded several other books on the psychoanalytical therapy of schizophrenics. Its orientation concerning the patient-therapist relationship, with its emphasis on motherliness, is similar to that of Mme. Sechehaye (1947), another Swiss worker in this field. Mrs. Schwing was one of the first to see the importance of the ward community for the psycho-therapeutic process. She is modest in assessing her results, which were very impressive, though not lasting. She deserves recognition and gratitude for an important piece of pioneer work.
The translation is excellent, but it would have been more correct and in keeping with the spirit of the book, which is free from mysticism, if Seele had been translated by mind.
