The present experimental trend in psychiatry is no doubt responsible for the revival of the interest in hypnosis. This makes the reappearance of Schilder's writings on this subject all the more welcome. This volume contains a short monograph on the nature of hypnosis first published in 1921, and the Textbook of Hypnosis, written jointly with Kauders. It is striking how much of Schilder's writings has preserved its freshness and topicality. It is fair to say that no new ideas of importance concerning hypnosis have been advanced since the appearance of these studies. It would be highly desirable that some at least of his interesting experiments should be repeated to-day, if possible with greater sophistication. There is another reason for welcoming the appearance of these papers in an English translation: they will save the interesting concepts of Landauer, Ferenczi, and others concerning hypnosis from oblivion. The translation is excellent.
