Perversions can be induced in a group where a leader, usually with a spontaneous perversion, takes over the rôle of the superego. The possibility of the induction of a parasitic perverse superego depends on an original latent superego split in the members of the group, and there is therefore a continuum between induced and genuine perversions. In the spontaneous perversions superego influences are also of great importance. These emanate from the parents who unconsciously hold up the ideal of the perverse gratifications. The acceptance of this ideal is also favoured by the superego as a counterphobic defence against castration fear. The therapy of induced perversions carries the better prognosis.
