This paper describes a fragment of an analysis which reveals the unconscious significance of pouting. In this patient, pouting was the means of expression of an oral conflict. It literally represented a reaching out for the breast and a simultaneous denial of the fact that he was not the infant feeding at the breast. It was as though he were saying, 'I actually have the breast in my mouth'. The impact of reality on this fantasy led to anger and depression.
