The author of this article has taken up two plays to illustrate O'Neill's oedipal conflict. The paper describes in detail how O'Neill's unconscious conflicts are represented in the two plays—'Long Day's Journey into Night' and 'Desire Under the Elms.' The former is a consciously intended autobiographical play. The latter is an unconscious autobiography. The author contrasts the two productions and thus reveals the common unconscious themes.
