It is difficult to see what purpose a Symposium of this kind is intended to serve. The protagonists are psychiatrists on the one hand, and religious leaders drawn from various denominations on the other. With one notable exception, the contributors do little more than state the practical terms on which they feel co-operation is possible. There is general agreement that psychiatrists should not try to do the work of clergymen and vice-versa, and that both have a role to play in society. So far so good, but discussion at this level merely avoids the fundamental conflicts which everyone knows exist and which are of real interest. Only Professor Hofmann of Harvard seems prepared to face the full implications of a thoroughgoing debate.
