This is a useful collection of contributions from students of personality working in Britain, the United States and Canada, West Germany, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, France, and Italy. Psycho-analytic theory is represented by Else Frenkel-Brunswick. The Symposium is opened by
an admirably balanced article by Gordon Allport, who points out that there is a basic difference in philosophical assumptions regarding the nature of mental life, the Lockean tradition being dominant in Britain and America, the Leibnizian and Kantian in Europe. Much of the basic ideas found in Anglo-American theories of personality is borrowed from continental sources, while Anglo-American research contributes much to the goal of precision and adds the emphasis on the environment. These observations are illustrated by the twenty-two contributions making up this interesting volume.
