This paper deals with the cliché in the ordinary sense of the term. It also discusses the place of jargon as it appears in the service of resistance. A phrase can be recognized as an expression of resistance when it becomes stereotyped and loses the meaning it once had. A number of examples of this phenomenon are given. The author points out that some interpretations belong to the same category. The cliché acts as a barrier to communication and is thus a resistance in psycho-analytic therapy.
