Amongst Micronesians there is a custom of artificially enlarging the female genitalia. This occurs in association with the practice of unilateral castration in the men. Devereux proposes that this hypertrophy of the clitoris and of the labia offsets castration anxiety in the male. The women's genitalia are made to approximate to those of the men. Observation of these people suggests that there is a close relationship between orgasm, enlargement of the labia minora, and urination.
