Freud's account of the patient Frau Emmy von N. in the Studies on Hysteria provides most of the material which the author examines in the light of more recent analytical knowledge. He refers to a number of factors which probably led to the patient's speech defect. Those named include repression of the oedipal wish, regression to orality, and separation anxiety in all its varied forms. Other references which Freud made to stuttering are also commented on. Freud was not optimistic about the value of psycho-analysis in speech disorders. Glauber, in the light of his own experiences, does not feel that this pessimism is justified.
