In this experimental project conditioning techniques were employed to discover the effect upon rhesus monkeys of affective disturbance in one of their own kind. The experiment indicated that the sight of another monkey either in a state of apprehension or in pain gave rise to an affective response which had already been extinguished by previous deconditioning. The authors suggest that the type of behaviour manifested by the experimental animals may be associated with the concept of empathy.
