The concept of neutralizing and the concept of collective alternates are helpful in the understanding of artistic processes and of the importance of normal regression during development. These concepts are also useful in respect of some points on technique. Thus the regressive processes in children and in adults should be judged in the following context:
1the extent to which the personality is involved in the regression;
