On analysing the mother of a very feminized boy, it was found that she had wished this marked femininity on her son and that he had complied without observable struggle before he was even a year old. The data suggest that his condition was not primarily the result of defences raised to combat anxiety or depression during infancy, or of defences against castration anxiety in the phallic stage or faulty resolution of the oedipal situation.
