Human identity is postulated as resulting from the integration of two frames of reference called self-realization and social definition. These forces are examined in terms of their early developmental precursors, and some comments of other writers referring to them are discussed. The hypothesis is presented that identity problems result from a disequilibrium between the two frames of reference.
