According to proposed hypothesis, we are in a position to delimit one phase of libidinal development which precedes and is a preliminary to orality. Its elements are manifest in later developmental stages and may emerge in regressive states. These elements have a share in the genesis of certain symptoms, such as stammering, affective tics of swallowing, anorexia, depression,
etc, and they reveal the lack of satisfaction of tendencies towards resignation, to the realization of homeostatic quiescence, and the abandonment of the extraverted attitude. These tendencies may be transformed into various depressive, masochistic, conversion, and other phenomena, culminating in suicidal fantasies. The sudden eruption of deglutitive phase tendencies in their original form occurs in states of collapse or shock.
