Dr Sutherland's term of office as Editor was due to come to an end in 1969. He was also due to retire within a short time from the Tavistock Clinic, which he had directed with distinction for many years. Anyone who knows Dr Sutherland will also know that the whole concept of "retirement" is quite inappropriate for so youthful and energetic a person. It is in keeping with his character that he decided to take the active step of resigning from his commitments in London and returning to his native Scotland—not to retire, but to deploy his energies in active teaching, practice and organization in Edinburgh.
Among his many other duties Dr Sutherland filled the dual role of being Editor of the Journal and of the International Psycho-Analytical Library. Before he assumed these duties he edited the British Journal of Medical Psychology, being succeeded by two editors, who wrote at the time: "It is a tribute to his editorial size that it takes two to fill the editorial chair he occupied." It is a further tribute to him that this has happened again, for the amount of work involved has made it necessary for editorial responsibility to be divided. Mr Masud Khan has been appointed Editor of the Library, but will also continue to give time to the Journal in his capacity as Associate Editor. We are also fortunate in having Dr Robert Wallerstein continue as Editor (North America), and in having the support and assistance of the other members of the Editorial Group.
Dr Sutherland has left his mark on the Journal. He did all he could to stimulate younger authors and to encourage those who were hesitant about submitting papers. He published new ideas which an editor with less broad an outlook might have rejected, and through his editorial vision contributed in a significant way to the extension of the frontiers of psychoanalysis.
