The author believes that to view psychoanalysis as an idiographic science (in Windelband's terms) might lead to an impasse, blocking the further development of psychoanalytic theory. 'Theory' and 'theoretical progress' are defined according to standards postulated by positivists like Popper et al. For an empirical re-evaluation of psychoanalytic theories Hoffmann suggests considering psychoanalysis as a nomothetic science.
