Dr Stewart presents a clear and useful account of Freud's researches and hypotheses before the publication of Interpretation of Dreams. This is a timely book that reminds us of the extraordinary fertility and range of Freud's researches in those years. In the post-war decades there has been a tendency to disregard the early work of Freud as either dated and obsolete or replaced by the later theories, especially that of the structural approach. Dr Stewart's very careful examination of Freud's correspondence with Fliess, the Project, and his early papers remedies this bias of contemporary analytic research in a positive and non-tendentious way. This is a book of real value for students and teachers who wish to gain a true historical view of the evolution of Freud's ideas and theories.
