This paper describes Katan's theory of the pre-psychotic phase and his method of reconstructing this phase in schizophrenic and paranoiac psychoses. An account is given of a case of paranoiac psychosis and Katan's method is used to reconstruct the pre-psychotic phase. The pre-psychotic fantasy derived from the patient's delusional experiences expose some weaknesses in Katan's theory.
