DEAR DR HAYLEY,
I have read Stephen S. Marmer's paper, 'Psychoanalysis of multiple personality' (International Journal of Psycho-Analysis, Vol. 6, Pt. 4, 439–459) and I think he has made some interesting points about the development and role of certain dissociative phenomena. However, his article makes some strong claims about 'being first' based on the omission of a number of papers that preceded his in the literature on multiple personality.
For instance, Dr Marmer represents his paper as the first, and only, published instance in which multiple personality was successfully treated by psychoanalysis. This claim ignores my paper, 'Psychoanalytic treatment of a case of multiple personality' published in 1978 in The Psychoanalytic Review (Vol. 65, No. 3, 355–380).
