Early psychic development is included in the personality and appears in the transference; the progress of the analytical process shows in turn that the changes achieved by the treatment transform the text of the original conflict. This twofold modification, concurrent and reciprocal, suggests that the reports concerning the early conflict must be considered screen memories, in spite of their being reported as actual facts.
A complete interpretation throws light on the past from the present and on the present from the past: interpretation and construction complement each other, they cannot be defined separately. Transference analysis distinguishes the past from the present, discriminates between the objective and the subjective. When this is attained, the past need not be repeated and remains as a reserve of experiences which are useful to understand the present and predict the future, not to misunderstand them.
