DEAR SIR,
Ordinarily I feel that book reviews ought not to be responded to by authors (or editors). After all, book reviews, whether positive or negative, are statements of more or less expert opinion, and it is incumbent on the journal reader to weigh the review and the reviewer by the same critical standards that should be applied to any other scientific article in the journal. I am however moved to depart from this position and to write, in response to the review by Joseph Slap that you carried of a book which I edited (Becoming a Psychoanalyst), for two reasons: (1) there are major mis-statements of fact in the review that can seriously mislead the potential reader; and (2) the review contains innuendos about matters of motivation that should not be allowed to stand without those attacked having some opportunity to present an alternate perspective upon the same issues.
