In his review of Structures of Subjectivity, Paul Rosenbaum (1988) states that our position on the role of intrapsychic conflict in the development of psychopathology 'is not altogether clear' (p. 557). It may be of interest to your readers to know that the question of how to understand intrapsychic conflict formation from a intersubjective perspective has been taken up in detail in a number of subsequent publications (e.g. Stolorow & Brandchaft, 1987); (Stolorow et al., 1987, chapters 6 and 7).
