The present editorial team's tenure of office will finish with the final part of this volume at the end of this year. It is not always understood that all the editorial appointments to the International Journal, with no exception, are honorary and we wish to express here our deep appreciation for the work undertaken by the Editors for North America, Europe and Latin America together with the members of the outstanding Boards they have been able to assemble. Dr Vann Spruiell, Mrs Anne-Marie Sandler and Dr Horacio Etchegoyen and Dr Jorge Ahumada have not only given unstintingly of their own time and effort but have also been able to inspire colleagues on their respective Boards to carry out the task. We shall have more to say about them and their achievement at the appropriate time when we conclude all our terms later in the year.
Meanwhile, this is to announce that the British Psycho-Analytical Society has decided that in future, when there is a change of editors in London, as there will be now, the customary procedure whereby the new editor or editors have appointed (or re-appointed) colleagues in North America, Europe and Latin America on the basis of an informal system of advice, should be changed. The increasing size and complexity of our psychoanalytic institutions, developments in regional organisation and representation, and the appointment of Editorial Boards to advise our regional editors (begun first by Dr Edward Weinshel in North America and then accelerated by the present incumbents), have all combined to convince us that despite the very considerable merits of the old informal systems and their excellent results, the time has come to formalise the way in which editors are chosen. In future, when there is a new Editor in London, the appointment of Editors for North America, Latin America and Europe, will be made after a regional search committee has been appointed to canvass legitimate opinion among relevant societies and institutes.
