Israëls has in his letter distorted my review in much the same way that he distorted the cocaine episode itself in his book. I will respond only to his five main points, in order to illustrate what I mean. The reader is assured that the same disingenuity characterizes the other points that he makes in his letter.

(1)In his book, Israëls claimed that Eissler suppressed a rancorous letter about Carl Koller that Freud wrote to Meller in 1934. Israëls claimed further that this was done in order to uphold a false impression (created by Bernfeld and Jones) to the effect that Freud had in the mid 1880s reacted in a gentlemanly fashion to Koller's discovery.
