The sub-title of this volume edited by Anna Nicolò Corigliano, ‘Essays on psychoanalysis and the couple’ (the main title means ‘treating the relationship’), indicates that its subject matter occupies an intermediate space defined in accordance with a theoretical position that has absorbed the teachings of Balint, Bion, Winnicott and, to some extent, Baranger & Baranger. Attention focuses on the concept of the relationship—between subject and object, between therapist and patient, between the individuals making up the couple, between the co-therapists, between the members of the family and—also—between psychoanalytic theory and its application to couple therapy.
