The Piano (1993)
Director: Jane Campion
Distributed by Live Home Video Inc.
Ada (Holly Hunter) meets Stewart (Sam Neill), her husband by an arranged marriage, on a beach full of foreboding in the dream-like wilderness of mid-nineteenth century New Zealand. Arriving by ship from Scotland, she has waited overnight with her 9-year-old daughter, Flora. Her most precious possession, a piano, is left on the beach by the awkward and unempathic Stewart. It is later rescued by Baines (Harvey Keitel), another settler, in an exchange for land with Stewart. Feigning interest in piano lessons from Ada, Baines offers to return the piano to her in exchange for sexual favours. Eventually they fall in love. When Flora reveals to Stewart that her mother's affair continues, Stewart chops off part of Ada's finger. Having relinquished hope of gaining Ada's love, Stewart allows Ada and Flora to leave with Baines, and they establish a family.
This voice-over accompanies establishing shots of Ada's life in Scotland before her journey to New Zealand.
