This issue of the International Journal marks a significant moment in its history with the departure of two of its most influential figures—Arnold Cooper, Editor for North America, and Professor David Tuckett, London Editor and Editor-in-Chief. Both retired at the end of July 2001 following remarkably productive periods in office that have seen the Journal grow from an already solid position to an even stronger one.
Arnold Cooper joined the Journal as Editor for North America in the middle of 1993. He brought to the task an assortment of talents and personal capacities that have been instrumental to the growth of the Journal. His wit, charm and extraordinary intelligence allowed him to assemble a team of first-rate psychoanalytic thinkers to join him on the North American Editorial Board. His broadly inclusive leadership style generated a good deal of enthusiasm and a strong sense of participation in this group of colleagues. Arnie has an unparalleled capacity to enlist the spirited collaboration of others. He has also modeled ways in which editors can share constructive criticism while also encouraging authors and editorial peers to improve their work. He has been deeply committed to the peer review process and has worked diligently to transform it into a form of helpful consultation to psychoanalytic writers. Arnie has always been convinced that psychoanalysis needs to transcend its self-defeating isolation and engage in mutual dialogue with neighboring disciplines. One of his greatest contributions during his eight years as Editor for North America has been his establishment of regular features in the Journal that draw from related fields. This highly popular effort has spawned series on philosophy, literary criticism, neuroscience, and psychoanalytic perspectives on film. Arnie's vast experience and wisdom have made him an able mentor to many of us who have worked on the Editorial Board, and we are all deeply in his debt.
